RIM The grand piano's unique housing, known as the rim, showcases the ESSEX's STEINWAY & SONS design heritage. By providing support for the soundboard, the rim helps the piano remain stable.
The inner rim of the ESSEX grand piano is made of laminated European Beech, while the outside rim is made of laminations of European Maple (Acer platanoides) (Fagus sylvatica). WIDE-TAIL The wide-tail design found on all ESSEX grands is a STEINWAY & SONS exclusive that adds 6% extra surface area to the soundboard.
This enhances the tone and gives the pianist the feeling that he is playing on a larger instrument.
The enlarged soundboard area also allows for better placement of the bass bridge, resulting in increased loudness, tone, and bass that sings. SOUNDBOARD The ESSEX, like all STEINWAY & SONS pianos, has a soundboardmade off solid high-gradee, straight-grained spruce chosen for its exceptional acoustic properties.
It also has a unique tapering profile that is thicker in the treble and narrower in the bass, allowing for freer vibration and more sonic volume. PLATE The plate, designed by STEINWAY & SONS, is cast from grey ironandoverbuiltt to handle 20 tonnes of string tension. Long-fiber cast iron produces a dense plate that does not absorb energy and produces a richer tone.
HAMMERS/ACTION Steinway specifies essex grand hammers, which are manufactured in japan by imadegawa utilizing german-made hammer felt and hornbeam mouldings. The essex action is made of wood (not plastic) and is based on the exclusive designs of steinway & sons.
It features faster repetition, improved stability, and increased responsiveness, allowing the musician to play with maximum expression and control.
